How to play Saanp Seedhi
- Pick a mode: against the computer, two players, or four players on the same device.
- Tap the die, click it or press Space to roll. Your pawn hops forward that many squares.
- If you land at the bottom of a ladder, you climb up. If you land on a snake's head, you slide down to its tail.
- Rolling a six gives you another turn. Three sixes in a row end your streak.
- You must land exactly on square 100. If your roll is too big, you stay where you are.
- The first pawn to reach 100 wins the game.
Controls
- Keyboard: Press Space or Enter to roll the die.
- Mouse: Click anywhere on the game or on the die to roll.
- Touch screen: Tap the die or the Roll button. In pass and play, hand the phone to the next player.
Tips to score higher
- There is no skill in the roll, but you can enjoy the surprise. Cheer for ladders and groan at snakes together.
- In pass and play, say the square number out loud before each turn. It keeps everyone following the board.
- Near the end, small numbers are often better. A big roll near 100 can waste a turn.
- Look out for the long snake near the top of the board. It can undo a lot of progress.
The story behind Saanp Seedhi
Snakes and ladders began in ancient India, where it was known as Moksha Patam and Vaikunthapali. The ladders stood for good deeds and virtues that lift a person up, and the snakes stood for bad habits that pull them down, so the game quietly taught life lessons to children. British families took the game home in the 1800s and gave it the name snakes and ladders, and it spread across the world from there. Many of us remember the folded paper board, a few coins as pawns and a loud argument over whose turn it was. Saanp Seedhi brings that summer holiday feeling back to your screen.
