How to play Green Mahjong
- Pick a layout: Turtle, Flower, Spider, Cloud, Bug or Four Hills.
- Look for two identical tiles that are both free. A free tile has no tile on top and an open left or right side.
- Click or tap both tiles to remove them from the board.
- Keep matching to uncover the tiles below.
- Clear every tile to win. If no free pairs are left, the round is over.
Controls
- Keyboard: Not needed.
- Mouse: Click a free tile, then click its matching partner.
- Touch screen: Tap a free tile, then tap its match.
Tips to score higher
- Work on the tallest stacks first. Tiles buried deep in a pile are the hardest to free.
- If four copies of a tile are open, match them all together so none get trapped.
- Clear long rows from the ends so both sides open up.
- Start with Turtle or Bug if you are new, then try Spider and Cloud.
The story behind Green Mahjong
Mahjong is a tile game that grew popular in China in the 19th century and later spread around the world. The single player matching version came much later: Brodie Lockard made a computer version called Mah-Jongg for the PLATO system in 1981, and Activision's Shanghai brought it to home computers in 1986. Green Mahjong is a free and open source take on that idea, with crisp tiles and several layouts. Its quiet, calm rhythm makes it a favourite for a short break.

Is this the same as four player mahjong?
No. This is mahjong solitaire, a one player matching game that uses mahjong tiles.
