Queens Puzzle is a free logic game where you crown one queen in every row, column and colour region of a square board. No two queens may touch, not even at the corners. It runs in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and plays offline once loaded.
Inspired by: The chess queens puzzle, in the colour region style of popular daily logic games.
How to play Queens Puzzle
- Choose a board size from 6 x 6 up to 9 x 9. Bigger boards are harder.
- Tap a square once to mark a cross, which means no queen can go there.
- Tap again to place a queen. A third tap clears the square.
- Each row, each column and each colour needs exactly one queen.
- Queens cannot touch each other, even diagonally. Clashing queens turn red.
- Place all the queens correctly to win. Every board has just one answer.
Controls
- Keyboard: Arrow keys move the cursor. Space or Enter cycles a square, X marks a cross, U undoes and H gives a hint.
- Mouse: Click to cycle empty, cross and queen. Right click marks a cross directly.
- Touch screen: Tap a square to cycle it. Use Undo, Hint and Clear below the board.
Tips to score higher
- Start with the smallest colour regions. If a region has one square, the queen has to go there.
- When a colour is confined to a single row or column, cross out the rest of that line.
- Use crosses freely. They show what you have ruled out and make the next move clear.
- If two colours share the same two columns, no other colour can use those columns.
- Stuck? A hint places one queen correctly, but costs some points.
The story behind Queens Puzzle
The queens puzzle comes from chess. In 1848 the chess player Max Bezzel asked how to put eight queens on a board so none attack each other, and the question has fascinated mathematicians ever since, including the famous Carl Friedrich Gauss. Computer scientists still use it to teach clever searching. In the 2020s a colourful twist appeared, where the board is split into coloured regions and each region needs one queen. That version became a daily habit for many people during short breaks. If you enjoyed chess clubs or school puzzle periods, this one will feel familiar and fresh at once.
Questions players ask
Is the Queens Puzzle free?
Yes. It is free with no sign up, no download and no payments.
Can two queens touch diagonally?
No. Queens may not touch in any direction, including at the corners. The game shows clashes in red.
Does every puzzle have one answer?
Yes. The game builds each board and checks that only one solution exists, so you can always solve it by logic.
What does the cross do?
A cross is a note to yourself that a queen cannot go on that square. It does not count as a queen.
Can I play offline?
Yes. Load the page once while online and it will keep working without internet.
