Color Memory is a free pattern memory game in the style of the classic Simon toy. Four coloured pads light up with their own notes, and you repeat the pattern as it grows longer. It runs in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and keeps working offline once loaded.
Inspired by: Simon, the electronic memory game from 1978.
How to play Color Memory
- Pick Normal or Strict mode on the start screen.
- Watch the pads light up and listen to their notes.
- When it says Your turn, repeat the same order by clicking or tapping the pads.
- Every round adds one more step, and the pattern plays faster as it gets longer.
- Reach round 20 to win. In Normal mode you have 3 tries. In Strict mode one mistake ends the game.
Controls
- Keyboard: Arrow keys press the pad in that direction: up, right, down and left. The number keys 1 to 4 also work.
- Mouse: Click the coloured pads.
- Touch screen: Tap the coloured pads.
Tips to score higher
- Say the colours in your head, or give them names like a short song.
- Break a long pattern into small chunks of three or four steps.
- Listen as well as watch. Each pad has its own note, and the sounds help your memory.
- Do not wait too long. If you take more than five seconds the turn counts as a mistake.
- Practise in Normal mode first, then try Strict mode for a real challenge.
The story behind Color Memory
Simon was an electronic game made by Ralph Baer and Howard Morrison and launched by Milton Bradley in 1978. It had four big coloured buttons that lit up and played tones, and it came out in the golden age of arcades and toy shops. It was one of the first handheld style electronic games for the home, and it turned a simple memory test into a party game. Many of us grew up with a copy or a clone of it, passed around among cousins at family gatherings. Color Memory keeps the glowing pads and the nervous silence between rounds.
Questions players ask
Is Color Memory free to play?
Yes. It is free to play with no sign up, no download and no in-game purchases.
What is Strict mode?
In Strict mode there are no second chances. One wrong pad ends the game. In Normal mode you get 3 tries.
Why does each pad make a sound?
The tones help you remember the order. Playing with sound on usually makes the game easier.
Does it improve memory?
It is a fun way to practise short term memory. We do not make any medical claims, it is simply a good brain game.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Tap the pads. The game fits a phone screen.
