How to play Typing Speed Test
- Choose a 30 second or a 60 second test.
- Start typing the highlighted word. The clock begins with your first key.
- Press Space after each word to move to the next one.
- Green letters are right and red letters are wrong. Use Backspace to fix a word before you press Space.
- When time is up you see your words per minute, your accuracy and the number of words you got right.

The story behind Typing Speed Test
The keyboard layout we still use, QWERTY, comes from the typewriters sold in the 1870s. Typing speed was a serious job skill for much of the twentieth century, and in India many people remember typing institutes with rows of heavy typewriters and the steady clatter of keys. Speed is counted in words per minute, where a word is counted as five characters, so long and short words are treated fairly. Today the same skill helps with email, coding and chat. This test lets you see where you stand and watch your speed grow.

How is WPM calculated?
Words per minute counts every five correct characters as one word, including the spaces, and divides by the time. Only words typed fully right count.
What is a good typing speed?
Many people type around 40 words per minute. Above 60 is quick, and above 80 is very fast. Accuracy matters as much as speed.
Can I take the test on my phone?
Yes. Tap the text box and your phone keyboard opens. Phone typing is usually slower than on a computer keyboard.
