Memory Card is a free matching game where 16 cards lie face down and you flip two at a time to find the eight pairs. It plays in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and suits kids and adults alike.
Inspired by: The traditional Concentration (Pairs) card game.
How to play Memory Card
- All 16 cards start face down with a question mark.
- Click or tap a card to flip it, then flip a second one.
- If the two pictures match, they stay open.
- If they do not match, both cards shake and turn back over.
- Find all eight pairs to finish. The board then shuffles for a new round.
Controls
- Keyboard: Not used.
- Mouse: Click a card to flip it.
- Touch screen: Tap a card to flip it.
Tips to score higher
- Flip cards in a fixed order, row by row, so it is easier to remember where each picture sits.
- Say the picture names in your head as you flip them. Words stick better than images alone.
- When you see a picture for the second time, go for its match right away before you forget.
The story behind Memory Card
Matching pairs from a face down spread is a very old card game known as Concentration or Pairs, played with an ordinary deck long before screens existed. In 1959 the German publisher Ravensburger released a picture card version called Memory, and it went on to become a family favourite around the world. Many of us played it on the floor with cousins during summer holidays, arguing over whose turn it was. The rules are simple, yet it gives your short term memory a real workout.
