Solitaire is the classic Klondike card game, free to play in your browser with no download or sign up. Move every card to the four foundations, from Ace up to King, using undo and hints when you get stuck. It works best on a computer with a mouse.
Inspired by: Klondike solitaire, made famous by Windows in 1990.
How to play Solitaire
- Seven columns are dealt with the top card of each one face up.
- Drag cards onto other columns in falling order, alternating red and black, like a black 9 on a red 10.
- Move Aces to the empty foundation spaces at the top, then build each suit up to the King.
- Click the deck in the top left to turn over new cards when you run out of moves.
- Only a King can fill an empty column. Move all 52 cards to the foundations to win.
Controls
- Keyboard: Ctrl + Z undoes your last move.
- Mouse: Drag and drop cards. Click the deck to deal. Use the Undo, Hint and Restart buttons at the top.
- Touch screen: Built for a mouse. Dragging cards on some phones may not work well.
Tips to score higher
- Turn over face down cards whenever you can. Hidden cards are what block a win.
- Do not rush to empty a column unless you have a King ready to move into it.
- Play Aces and Twos to the foundations straight away, but keep higher cards in the columns if they help you build.
- Use Hint when you feel stuck. It often spots a move you missed.
The story behind Solitaire
Klondike is a patience card game that goes back to the 1800s, and its name is linked to the Klondike gold rush in Canada. It became world famous in 1990, when Microsoft added Solitaire to Windows 3.0 to help people get comfortable using a mouse. Wes Cherry, an intern at the time, wrote that first version. For many office workers and school kids in India, the bouncing cards at the end of a win were the first computer animation they ever cheered for.
