Retro Snake is a free online version of the snake game that lived on Nokia phones. It runs right in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
Inspired by: Snake on Nokia phones (1997).
How to play Retro Snake
- Pick Classic walls if you want the borders to end your run, or No walls to pass through the edges.
- Steer the snake with the arrow keys, WASD, a swipe or the on-screen arrows.
- Eat the dots to grow longer and score points. The snake speeds up as it grows.
- Every fifth dot brings a bonus bug for a few seconds. Catch it for extra points.
- The run ends when the snake hits a wall or bites its own tail.
Controls
- Keyboard: Arrow keys or WASD to turn. P or Esc to pause.
- Touch screen: Swipe on the screen or tap the arrow pad below the game.
Tips to score higher
- Move in wide loops along the edges so your tail never traps you in the middle.
- Plan two turns ahead. You can queue quick turns, so tap them in order.
- Leave a gap open toward the centre of the board once the snake is long.
- Go for the bonus bug only when the path is clear. A long detour can cost the run.
The story behind Retro Snake
Snake games go back to the 1976 arcade game Blockade, but most of us met the snake on a Nokia phone. Nokia put Snake on the 6110 in 1997, and later versions shipped on hits like the 3310. For millions of people in India, that tiny green screen was their first video game. It was played in school buses, in class under the desk and in long queues. Retro Snake keeps that simple joy: one button press, one more dot, one more try.
