Block Stacker is a free falling blocks puzzle with the grey green look of the pocket brick game. It runs in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
Inspired by: Falling block puzzles and the 9999 in 1 handheld brick games (1990s).
How to play Block Stacker
- Seven kinds of blocks fall into a well that is ten columns wide and twenty rows tall.
- Move a block left or right and turn it so it fits the gaps below.
- Fill a whole row with no gaps and it flashes and disappears.
- Clear four rows at once for the biggest score. Points are 100, 300, 500 and 800, times your level.
- Every ten rows you clear, the level goes up and the blocks fall faster.
- The game ends when the stack reaches the top of the well.
Controls
- Keyboard: Left and right to move, Up or Z to turn, Down to fall faster, Space to slam the block down. P or Esc to pause.
- Touch screen: Drag sideways to move, tap to turn, drag down to fall faster, flick down to slam. The on-screen pad has a Drop button too.
Tips to score higher
- Keep the stack flat. Holes under a block are much harder to fix than a tall tower.
- Look at the NEXT box and plan where the following block will go.
- Leave one column open on the side and wait for a long straight block to clear four rows.
- Use the faint ghost shape to see where the block will land before you slam it down.
The story behind Block Stacker
Falling block puzzles began in 1984 when Alexey Pajitnov made a game on a Soviet computer. It spread across the world and reached the Game Boy in 1989. In the 1990s, cheap pocket consoles with a grey green screen and a long list of built in games, often sold as 9999 in 1, made it a hit with kids everywhere. In India, many of us had one in a school bag, with the tiny speaker beeping under the desk. Block Stacker brings back that chunky black block look and the good feeling of a perfect row.
