Bomb Squad is a free maze game in the style of the old Bomberman classic. You drop bombs to blast soft blocks, dodge wandering critters, collect power ups and hunt for the hidden exit door. It runs in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and keeps working offline after the first load.
Inspired by: Bomberman (Hudson Soft, 1983).
How to play Bomb Squad
- Move your bomb tech around the grid. Grey blocks never break, brick blocks do.
- Drop a bomb and step away fast. The blast travels in four straight lines and stops at walls.
- Blow up brick blocks to find power ups for bigger blasts, extra bombs and faster feet.
- Hit every critter with a blast. Once the last one is gone, the hidden door opens.
- Walk into the open door to clear the level. You have three lives, so stay out of the fire.
Controls
- Keyboard: Arrow keys or WASD to move. Space to drop a bomb. P or Esc to pause.
- Mouse: Click on the board to drop a bomb at your feet.
- Touch screen: Use the arrow pad to move and the Bomb button to drop a bomb.
Tips to score higher
- Always plan your escape before you place a bomb. A dead end is a trap.
- Bombs set off other bombs. Place two in a line to start a chain reaction from a safe corner.
- Grab speed power ups early. A faster tech is the best defence on later levels.
- Bats and ghosts chase you, so lead them into a corridor and then blast them from the side.
- Do not rush the door. Clear the critters first, because the door only opens when they are gone.
The story behind Bomb Squad
Bomberman first appeared in 1983, made by Hudson Soft for early Japanese home computers. The idea was simple and brilliant: a maze, bombs with a timer, and blasts that spread in a cross. It became a big hit when a console version arrived in the mid 1980s, and later versions added four player battles that filled living rooms with shouting. Many of us in India met this kind of game on multi game console clones in the 1990s, where one friend held the controller and the others gave very loud advice. Bomb Squad brings back that same tense, funny feeling of running from your own bomb.
