Bug Blaster is a free arcade shooter in the style of the classic Centipede. A long bug crawls down through a field of mushrooms and you shoot it from the bottom of the screen. It runs in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and keeps working offline once loaded.
Inspired by: Centipede, the Atari arcade game (1981).
How to play Bug Blaster
- Move your blaster around the bottom area of the screen.
- Shoot the bug. Hit any segment and it turns into a mushroom, and the bug splits in two.
- Each new piece gets its own head, so more heads means more danger. Shoot the head for 100 points.
- Mushrooms block the bug and take three hits to destroy. Use them to steer the bug.
- Watch out for the purple spider. It zigzags near you and eats mushrooms. Shoot it for up to 900 points.
Controls
- Keyboard: Arrow keys or WASD to move, hold Space to fire. P or Esc pauses.
- Mouse: Press and drag on the screen. The blaster follows your pointer and fires while the button is down.
- Touch screen: Drag your finger on the screen to move and fire, or use the arrow pad and the Fire button.
Tips to score higher
- Clear a path of mushrooms in one column and the bug will drop through it quickly, so keep some mushrooms standing.
- Shoot the bug early, high up on the screen, so the pieces have a long way to travel.
- Stay near the sides of the bottom area. The middle is where the spider likes to roam.
- Shoot the spider when it is close to you for the biggest score.
The story behind Bug Blaster
Centipede was released by Atari in 1981 and was designed by Ed Logg and Dona Bailey. It was one of the first arcade hits that drew in a large number of women and girls, and it used a trackball for smooth aiming. The idea was very new: a creature that grew more dangerous every time you hit it. Many players in India met the same kind of game later, on home computers and in cyber cafes, with a simple keyboard and endless one more try energy. Bug Blaster keeps that tense fun, with its own art, its own bug and its own spider.
