Carrom is a free online carrom board game that you play against the computer or alone for practice. It runs in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
Inspired by: The traditional carrom board game played across South Asia.
How to play Carrom
- Choose Vs computer to play white coins against the black coins, or Solo practice to pocket all coins in 30 strikes.
- Slide the striker along your baseline to a good spot.
- Drag back anywhere on the board, then let go to flick. A longer drag means a harder shot.
- Pocket your own coins to score 10 points each and to keep your turn. Pocketing the queen then covering it with another coin gives 50 points.
- If your striker drops into a pocket it is a foul and one of your coins returns to the board.
- Clear all nine of your coins before the computer does to win.
Controls
- Keyboard: Left and right arrows slide the striker. Up and down arrows turn the aim. Hold Space to charge power and release to shoot.
- Mouse: Click and drag on your baseline to slide the striker. Drag back from anywhere else and release to shoot.
- Touch screen: Slide the striker with your finger on the baseline, then drag back on the board and lift to flick.
Tips to score higher
- Aim the coin at a pocket first and think about the striker second. A thin cut sends the coin farther than a straight hit.
- Use gentle power for coins near a pocket. A fast striker often follows the coin into the hole.
- Bank shots off the side walls work well when your path is blocked by other coins.
- Break the cluster in the middle early, because loose coins are easier to pocket.
- Keep the queen for when you have an easy coin ready to cover it on the next shot.
The story behind Carrom
Carrom is a board game from South Asia, and most people believe it began in India. Players flick a heavy striker across a smooth wooden board to knock small discs into four corner pockets. Over the years it became a favourite at family gatherings, in summer holidays and on lazy afternoons in neighbourhood lanes and club rooms. Today there are national and international carrom competitions. If you grew up in India, you may remember the scattered boric powder, the sound of the striker and the cheer when the queen finally dropped. This version brings that same simple joy to your screen.
