Kanche Marbles is a free online version of the street game many of us played as kids. Flick your shooter marble at a ring of glass marbles and knock them out to win them. It runs in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and keeps working offline once loaded.
Inspired by: Kanche, the street marbles game played across India.
How to play Kanche Marbles
- Glass marbles sit inside a ring drawn in the dirt. You shoot from the line at the bottom.
- Drag back from anywhere, like pulling a slingshot, then let go to flick your shooter.
- Any marble that ends outside the ring is yours. Knock one out and you shoot again.
- If your shooter stops inside the ring, you lose your turn. Then the computer shoots.
- A round ends when the ring is empty. Whoever won more marbles takes the round.
- Play three rounds. Win more rounds than the computer to win the match.
Controls
- Keyboard: Left and right arrows turn your aim. Hold Shift and press left or right to slide the shooter. Hold Space to charge and release to shoot.
- Mouse: Press, drag back and release. A longer drag is a harder flick. Click the bottom strip to slide the shooter.
- Touch screen: Drag back with your finger and lift. Tap the bottom strip to slide your shooter before aiming.
Tips to score higher
- Aim at the edge of the cluster. Marbles on the outside leave the ring more easily.
- A medium flick often works better than a hard one. A hard shot can send your own shooter flying into the ring.
- Slide your shooter left or right to change the angle before you aim.
- When two marbles are close to the edge, line up one shot that pushes both out.
- Look at the dotted line. It shows the direction your shooter will take.
The story behind Kanche Marbles
Marbles is one of the oldest toys in the world. Small stone and clay balls have been found in ancient Egypt, Rome and India, and children have been flicking them for thousands of years. In India the game is known as kanche, kancha or goli, and it is played on dusty lanes, in school grounds and in village squares, often with a ring drawn on the ground with a stick. Many of us remember pockets full of glass marbles, scuffed knees and the proud feeling of winning a favourite colour from a friend. Kanche Marbles brings that summer evening feeling to your screen, without the dust.
