How to play Penalty Shootout
- When you shoot, press near the ball and drag toward where you want it to go. Let go to kick.
- A longer drag is a harder shot, but very hard shots are less accurate.
- When you are in goal, click or tap where you want to dive before the ball arrives.
- Each side takes 5 kicks. The most goals wins.
- If it is level after 5 kicks, sudden death begins. The first side to lead after both kick wins.
Controls
- Keyboard: When shooting, use the arrow keys to move the aim and Space to kick. In goal, press Left, Right, Up or Down to dive.
- Mouse: Drag from the ball toward the goal and release. In goal, click where you want to dive.
- Touch screen: Drag from the ball toward the goal and let go. In goal, tap where you want to dive.
Tips to score higher
- Corners are hard to save, but be careful not to miss the target completely.
- Mix up your shots so the keeper can not guess.
- As keeper, watch the kicker. Tapping early gives you time to reach the ball.
- A medium power shot is often more accurate than an all out blast.
- In sudden death, stay calm and keep your usual routine.
The story behind Penalty Shootout
The penalty kick was added to the laws of football in 1891, after a famous suggestion from the Irish goalkeeper William McCrum. Penalty shootouts came later, to decide drawn knockout matches fairly, and were approved by the game's lawmakers in 1970. The first World Cup match decided on penalties was the 1982 semi final between West Germany and France. Nothing builds tension like a shootout, and many of us in India have watched one in a hushed living room, hearts pounding, with the whole family on the sofa. This game puts you right at the spot.
