Piano Tiles is a free music tapping game. Black tiles scroll down four lanes and every tile you tap plays the next note of a well known tune. It runs in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
Inspired by: Tap the black tile music games popular on phones in the 2010s.
How to play Piano Tiles
- Pick a song: Ode to Joy, Twinkle Twinkle or Jingle Bells.
- Tap the first black tile to start. The tiles begin to move down.
- Tap each black tile, always the lowest one first. Every tap plays the next note.
- Never tap a white square, and never let a black tile slip off the bottom of the screen.
- The tiles get faster with every note. Finish the whole song to hear it complete and keep going.
Controls
- Keyboard: Lane keys from left to right are A or Left arrow, S or Down arrow, W or Up arrow, and D or Right arrow. P or Esc pauses.
- Mouse: Click the black tiles in the order they reach the bottom.
- Touch screen: Tap the black tiles with one or two fingers. Quick taps with two thumbs work well.
Tips to score higher
- Look a row or two ahead of the tile you are tapping, not at your finger.
- Tap near the top part of each black tile, so you have more time before it reaches the bottom.
- Use both thumbs on a phone, one for each side of the screen.
- Turn the sound on. The tune gives you a steady beat that makes the rhythm easier to follow.
The story behind Piano Tiles
Tap the black tile games became a big hit on phones in the early 2010s, because the rule is so simple that anyone can start in seconds. They also turned a plain tapping test into a music game, since each tile plays a note. The songs here are old tunes that belong to everyone. Ode to Joy comes from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony of 1824, Twinkle Twinkle uses a French melody that was already popular in the 1700s, and Jingle Bells was written by James Lord Pierpont and published in 1857. Many of us learned at least one of them in school music class, so the notes feel familiar the moment you start.
