Tank Battle is a free top down tank shooter in the style of the old 8-bit console classics. You drive one tank, protect your base flag and take down 20 enemy tanks in every stage. It runs in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and keeps working offline once loaded.
Inspired by: Battle City on the Famicom and NES (1985) and the 8-bit tank games of the 90s.
How to play Tank Battle
- Drive your yellow tank around the map and keep the base flag at the bottom safe.
- Shoot enemy tanks before they reach the flag. Each stage sends 20 of them, a few at a time.
- Brick walls break when you shoot them. Steel walls stay, water blocks tanks and trees hide them.
- Flashing enemy tanks drop a power star. Pick it up for faster shots, two bullets and finally steel breaking power.
- You have 3 lives. The game ends if you lose them all or if the flag is destroyed.
Controls
- Keyboard: Arrow keys or WASD to drive. Space, Enter or Z to fire. P or Esc to pause.
- Touch screen: Use the arrow pad on the left to drive and the Fire button on the right to shoot.
Tips to score higher
- The brick wall around the flag is its only shield, so avoid shooting it yourself.
- Armoured gold tanks take four hits. Shoot from a distance and keep moving sideways.
- Kill the flashing tanks early to get the power star before the stage gets crowded.
- Camp near the top middle of the map to catch enemies as they spawn, but check the flag often.
- Shooting an enemy bullet with your own bullet cancels both, so you can use it as a shield.
The story behind Tank Battle
Top down tank shooters became a childhood favourite in the 1980s. Battle City, released by Namco for the Famicom in 1985, gave players a base to defend and brick walls to blast through, and its design was copied in countless clones. In India and many other places, the game arrived on cheap 90s TV consoles and handhelds, often as a famous cartridge simply labelled Tank 1990. Many of us shared one controller with a cousin and argued over who had to guard the flag. Tank Battle brings back that same blocky joy.
Questions players ask
Is Tank Battle free to play?
Yes. It is free with no sign up, no download and no in-game purchases.
Can I play it on my phone?
Yes. A drive pad and a Fire button appear under the game on touch devices.
How many stages are there?
There are 8 stages. Each one sends 20 enemy tanks, and the later ones bring faster and tougher tanks.
What does the power star do?
Each star makes your tank stronger: faster bullets first, then two bullets at once, then bullets that can break steel walls. You lose the stars if your tank is destroyed.
Is this the original Battle City?
No. It is our own game inspired by the classic style, with original art, maps and sounds.
