Turbo Highway is a free arcade racer in the style of the old OutRun classics. You steer a sports car along curving coast roads, pass traffic and reach each checkpoint before time runs out. It runs in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and keeps working offline after the first load.
Inspired by: OutRun (Sega, 1986) and early pseudo 3D racers.
How to play Turbo Highway
- Hold the gas to build speed. Steer left and right to stay on the road.
- Reach the checkpoint gate before the timer hits zero. Each gate adds extra seconds.
- Pass slower cars for bonus points. Hitting one slows you down and costs time.
- Stay off the grass. Roadside palms and billboards stop you almost at once.
- Every checkpoint changes the scenery, from bright day to sunset, neon night and desert.
Controls
- Keyboard: Left and right arrows steer. Up arrow or Space is gas. Down arrow or X is brake.
- Touch screen: Use the left and right buttons to steer. The car accelerates by itself. Hold Brake to slow down.
Tips to score higher
- Lift off the gas a little before a sharp curve. The road pushes you outward at high speed.
- Hills hide traffic. Stay in the middle lane over a crest so you can dodge either way.
- Take the gap between two cars instead of changing lanes late.
- A crash costs more time than a short brake, so slow down early when a car is close.
- Check the gate bar at the top. If it is almost full, keep your speed up and do not take risks.
The story behind Turbo Highway
Pseudo 3D racing games appeared in arcades in the early 1980s, when games like Pole Position from Namco in 1982 made roads rush towards the player. Sega's OutRun in 1986 took the idea further with a sit down cabinet, open top car, branching routes and a choice of music, so the drive felt like a holiday. Arcades in India had plenty of racing cabinets and long queues for them. The trick was that the road was drawn as stripes that scale towards you, which gave a feeling of speed on very simple hardware. Turbo Highway uses the same trick with our own cars and scenery.
