Hangman is the classic word guessing game, free to play in your browser. Choose a category, guess the hidden word one letter at a time and keep the drawing from being finished. It needs no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and runs offline once the page has loaded.
Inspired by: Hangman, the paper and pencil word game.
How to play Hangman
- Pick a category: animals, countries, food, everyday things or Indian cities.
- A hidden word appears as empty lines, one for each letter.
- Guess a letter by typing it or tapping it on the board. Right letters fill in the blanks.
- Each wrong letter adds a part to the drawing. After six wrong guesses the game is over.
- Solve the word to score points and move straight to the next one. Fewer mistakes mean more points.
Controls
- Keyboard: Type any letter from A to Z to guess it. Esc pauses the game.
- Mouse: Click a letter on the board.
- Touch screen: Tap a letter on the board.
Tips to score higher
- Start with common vowels such as E, A and O, then try letters like R, N, S and T.
- Use the category. An animal name will not look like a city name, so think of words that fit.
- Look at the length of the word. Short words often use the same few common letters.
- Once you have a few letters, say the word aloud with sounds in the blanks. It often clicks.
The story behind Hangman
Hangman is a pencil and paper game with no known single inventor. It has been played in Britain since at least the late 1800s and spread through schools around the world. One player thinks of a word and draws blank lines, and the other guesses letters while a small gallows figure grows on the page. Teachers love it because it is a gentle way to practise spelling. Many of us in India played it on the last page of a notebook or on the blackboard in the final minutes of a free period, with the whole class shouting out letters.
