How to play Word Guess
- Choose Daily word for one shared puzzle each day, or Unlimited for endless practice.
- Type a five letter word with your keyboard or the keys on screen, then press Enter.
- Green tiles are the right letter in the right place.
- Amber tiles are in the word but in a different place. Grey tiles are not in the word at all.
- Use the clues to guess again. You have six tries in total.
- When you finish, copy your colour grid with Share result and send it to friends.
Controls
- Keyboard: Type letters, press Enter to submit and Backspace to delete.
- Mouse: Click the on-screen keys.
- Touch screen: Tap the on-screen keys. Tap Enter to submit your guess.
Tips to score higher
- Start with a word that uses common letters and different vowels, so your first clue is as useful as possible.
- Use the keyboard colours. They remember every letter you have tried.
- Repeated letters are possible. If a letter turns amber and green in the same word, it appears twice.
- Try a word that tests several new letters when you are stuck, instead of repeating old ones.
- In Daily mode you only get one try per date, so take a moment before the last guess.
The story behind Word Guess
Word guessing games have been around for a long time. In the 1950s a pencil game called Jotto let two people guess each other's five letter words, and the TV game show Lingo later brought the idea to a wide audience. Mastermind, from the 1970s, used colour pegs instead of letters. The idea came back in 2021 as a single daily puzzle with green, yellow and grey tiles, and people soon shared their coloured grids online. If you grew up on crosswords, antakshari or school spelling bees, this game will feel like a friendly challenge in a tiny package.

Yes. It is free, with no sign up, no download and no ads inside the game.
Is the daily word the same for everyone?
Yes. The daily word is chosen from the date, so everyone who plays on the same day gets the same word. You can play it once per day.
Can I play more than one word a day?
Yes. Switch to Unlimited mode for as many rounds as you like.
Why is my word not accepted?
The word has to be a real five letter English word from the game list. Try a more common spelling.
Does it work offline?
Yes. After the first visit the game keeps working without internet.
