Word Search is a free online puzzle with themed word lists. It runs in your browser with no download or sign up, works on phones and computers, and keeps working offline once the page has loaded. Each game has three puzzles, each with a 12 by 12 grid and eight words to find.
Inspired by: The classic newspaper word search puzzle, first published in 1968.
How to play Word Search
- Look at the word list under the grid.

- A correct word stays highlighted and is crossed off the list.
- Tap a word in the list for a hint that shows its first letter. This costs 15 points.

Tips to score higher
- Scan for the less common letters first, like Q, X, J or K.
- Remember words can run backwards and diagonally.
- Look for the first two letters of a word, then check all directions around them.
- Work through the list in order of the longest words, they are easier to spot.
- Use a hint only when you are really stuck.
The story behind Word Search
The word search puzzle was invented in 1968 by Norman E. Gibat, who published it in a local paper in Norman, Oklahoma. It quickly spread to newspapers, magazines and puzzle books worldwide. Simple, calm and satisfying, it has been a favourite for train journeys, waiting rooms and school breaks ever since. You only need a pencil and a little patience, and the small thrill of spotting a hidden word never really fades. Many Indian homes have a stack of puzzle books and a pencil somewhere, and a word search was often the thing you did while waiting for dinner or for the power to come back.
